What is TexShare?
TexShare is a program run by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) that serves to support Texas member libraries. There is a strong focus on resource sharing and cooperation among member libraries.

What programs does it include?
There are many programs that TexShare provides:
  • database program
  • card program
  • communications program
  • TExpress courier service
  • education services
  • interlibrary loan program
  • Library of Texas
  • TexTreasures grant program

Individual libraries may choose the programs in which to participate.

Who belongs to TexShare?
Member libraries include almost 700 public, academic, and medical libraries in Texas. For a listing of all member libraries, see TexShare Library Information.  For eligibility requirements, see TexShare Eligibility.

TexShare also consists of an advisory board, working groups for each of the eight programs it administers, and strategic partners.

TexShare Database Program

What databases are included?
From July 2005 to June 2006, the TexShare core database package will include 14 databases:

  • Masterfile Premier
  • Medline with MeSH
  • Regional Business News
  • Military and Government Collection
  • Literature Resource Center
  • Student Resource Center Gold
  • InfoTrac Newspapers
  • Health and Wellness Resource Center
  • WorldCat
  • NetLibrary ebook collection
  • HeritageQuest
  • ProQuest 20th Century Poetry Collection

Who can access the databases?
You must have a library card from a participating member library to access the TexShare databases.  Also, you must "qualify for services at a library established by an official Texas governmental agency" (see TexShare Database FAQs for the general public).

How do I access the databases?
There are a few ways for you to access the databases:
  • Onsite access: you can visit a participating member library to use the databases from the library's computers.  For a list of libraries that participate in the database program, see TexShare Library Information (note the column labelled DATABASES).

How do I use the databases?
There are a number of resources for help in using the databases:

What is TexSelect?
TexSelect databases are specialized databases that are available to member libraries through TexShare at an additional cost. This cost is usually less than what an individual library could negotiate for itself. See TexShare Select Database Information.

What is Library of Texas?
Library of Texas is a TexShare Web site that allows users to search in multiple TexShare databases, as well as Texas library catalogs, all at once.

TexShare Card Program

What can I do with a TexShare card?
A TexShare card allows you to borrow library items from participating libraries across Texas. 

How do I get a TexShare card?
You can obtain a TexShare card from the library you belong to, if your library participates in the TexShare Card Program.  For a list of libraries that participate in the card program, see TexShare Library Information (note the column labelled CARD PR.).

You must be in "good standing" at your library in order to get a TexShare card.

How long does a TexShare card last?
How long a TexShare card lasts depends on where you get it.  It may be one calendar year, one academic year, or one semester, for instance.

What is the Bridge to TexShare for Small/Rural Libraries?
The Bridge to TexShare for Small/Rural Libraries is a Web site designed to give small and rural libraries the most relevant information regarding TexShare and its programs. It contains a large amount of original content to guide library staff in getting the most out of TexShare for their libraries.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Bridge to TexShare for Small/Rural Libraries in Texas is to develop a community of users and advocates in rural settings by providing librarians and staff with a customized TexShare Web interface.  The Bridge will highlight the most relevant aspects of TexShare for rural communities, provide original instructional content and promote access and awareness of TexShare services.

Who created the Bridge?
The Bridge to TexShare for Small/Rural Libraries was created by the members of a graduate school class entitled Library Instruction and Information Literacy.
