Listing of Received TexShare Anecdotes

Castroville Public Library- Castroville

When patrons and callers asked questions like "Is so and so buried in the cemetery in Castroville." I would think, I guess you'll have to take a walk and see. But I found out you can find out in the genealogy section of Texshare. Yea!

A man showed up from society for random acts of genealogical kindness. He was sure a woman named Velma Pepper was buried here but I was able to teach him to use Texshare and he found her in Pipe Creek.

Another woman had a met a friend and they had decided their grandparents lived next door to each other. Using Texshare they found out the address where they lived.

Many school children have used the Texshare encyclopedias to print out information to study at home. Without Texshare they would have had to stay in the library using reference books.

Cisco Junior College- Cisco

We could not afford to offer the level of access that we do now if Texshare was taken away and we offer less today because of cutbacks. The Cisco Junior College libraries access to netLibrary effectively doubles the books available, and because they are online, we can make them available at both of our locations for one price without the delay and staff hours of having to request, pull, and transport them from one location to the other and back. The full-text of periodical articles means that we have access to literally hundreds, if not thousands of the periodicals that will actually be used because they match the indexing which students use to find articles. Our budget for paper periodicals is only about $16,000 which doubled last year when we started carrying the periodicals for the remote location (mostly nursing titles). Texshare (and online databases in general) have made us better stewards of our budgets by helping us to shift from "just-in-case" buying to "just-in-time" buying, to use business parlance.

Houston Public Library- Houston

A customer submitted this via e-mail: Thanks so much for offering NetLibrary. It is great!

Lark Branch Library- McAllen

A librarian recalls a time when a patron was about to interview for a job with a small laboratory in California: We found 3 articles on the company in the TexShare Databases. Our patron got the job!! I use many of the TexShare databases to help students find current events info.

Lubbock Christian University- Lubbock

At Lubbock Christian University, we maintain a collection of the approved K-12 textbooks for the state of Texas. The Library of Texas is my only source for searching for cataloging for these titles. Because we catalog most of these books into our regular circulating collection, I was spending hours searching individual catalogs for these titles. With LoT, I can quickly locate a Texas library with the title and the MARC record is included. If I desire to link to the library's actual online catalog, that link is also available - it's one-stop searching.

The Library of Texas has helped me professionally, as well as saving money for our library in the sense that it saves me a great deal of time that can then be used to perform other duties. For copy cataloging purposes, the site is very efficient, incorporating a large group of libraries and the Library of Congress.

University of Texas at Arlington- Arlington (on behalf of area public libraries)

Most public library budgets have been slashed to the bone. If it were not for the databases that are provided by TexShare, most libraries would not have anything to offer students writing research papers for school. After 25 years working with students in [public] libraries, I can say that this database program is one of the best tax supported programs ever offered. The money spent is not wasted. These databases provide students with reliable resources for their research. If it were not for these databases many students would be using unreliable sources from the Internet for their papers. Think about all the students in small towns all across Texas whose libraries are not large enough to provide this invaluable information. I just wanted to offer my support for this program. Most libraries could not provide quality resources without these databases.

Val Verde County Library- Del Rio

What I love about the TexShare databases is the look of absolute relief that comes over the faces of students when I introduce this treasure chest of resources for their papers. While we are a public library, we find that many students from the public schools and the Del Rio campuses of Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul Ross University come to us for their research needs. And, since we are a public library, our collection may not always reflect these schools' curriculum needs. But have no fear -- TexShare is here! Again, what a relief these students feel when they know suitable resources are available through the public library via TexShare -- we
virtually save their academic lives!

Thank You!
