ACS FAQ SHEET
What is an ACS Web Edition?
The American Chemical Societys Web Editions are web-based
online versions of the ACS print journals. They are full text articles
with all supplementary material delivered in two formats: HTML and
PDF. There are currently 27 Web Editions of the 35+ ACS publications.

What are some of the key features that are offered with the
ACS Web Editions of the journals (what gives the electronic version
added value)?
The Web Editions include everything available in print and
more. There are search capabilities by Title, Author and Keyword.
There are links to the other ACS journals, CAS, and PubMed/Medline
Abstracts.
What backfiles are included with the current years subscription
to Web Editions?
ACS Web Editions include access to the current year plus the previous
4 (5 years of full text journal access) 1996-2000. There are plans
in the future to make more articles available from volume 1, issue
1 of all the ACS Web Editions journals.
What years will be available in an ACS Web Editions subscription
for calendar 2001?
In 2001, the Web Editions access will be current year
(2001) plus the last 4 years (1997-2000). Please take special note
that this is the current official policy, but discussions are ongoing
concerning this issue. Clarifications and improvements to this official
policy are likely to be forthcoming.
Will there be archival access to the Web Editions in perpetuity?
The Governing Board of the ACS has approved an archive
policy which states that access for archives of subscriptions that
are not renewed for online Web Editions will be offered to the subscriber
as a cd rom for those years subscribed to in the past. Another option
offered will be further continued electronic access for a reasonable
annual fee.
Is there a TexShare Trial Period to try out ACS Web Editions?
Yes, the trial period is offered from June 19 July 31,
2000. If a library would like to sign up for the rest of the year
(August 1-December 31, 2000) then the cost would be a prorated 42%
of the full years cost. ACS Account Manager Doug Storm will
provide an exact quote of Web Editions costs for each library covering
the rest of the year once the trial period begins.
How does the library participate in the TexShare trial period
and/or subscribe? What do I need to do?
To take full advantage of the ACS-TexShare trial period, librarians
should send their information to the ACS Institutional Account manager
listed below with the following information:
(1) Library name and bill-to address
(2) Librarys contact persons name, telephone number
& fax number, and their email address (important for sending
usage statistics).
(3) The librarys range of IP address(es).
Please send this information in an email message to:

Voice Mail: 1-800-227-5558 ext. 4606
Or: 202-872-4606
What is the cost to participate in the ACS-TexShare consortial
agreement?
The ACS-TexShare consortial agreement is based upon the ACS Web
Editions Option B plan (print & web access). Participating libraries
are required to pay 15% above the cost of their librarys total
ACS print subscription(s). For example, if a library has 10 subscriptions
at a print cost $10,000 then the library would be required to pay
an additional $1,500 for the annual cost.
Is the cost prorated if a library participates during the year?
Yes, the Web Editions cost will be prorated.
If the library only subscribes to one journal or less than
the full print package, will that be the only Web Edition(s) the
library gains access to?
No, the library will gain access to all the current 27 Web
Editions, not just the ACS journals subscribed to in print, as a
benefit of the TexShare consortial arrangement
Could the library just pay an additional 15% over print cost
for selected ACS Web Editions subscriptions and not all the ACS
journals subscribed to in print?
Yes, a library can subscribe to the Web Editions a la carte. In
other words, just select subscriptions. But the library will have
access to only those select Web Editions, not the full 27. A TexShare
library must pay an additional 15% of ALL ACS print subscriptions
(of the 27 that have Web Editions) to benefit from the consortial
arrangement, i.e. access to all 27 Web Editions.
Can a library participate if it has no ACS print subscriptions?
Yes, if a library currently has no ACS print subscriptions,
the library can still participate with full access to all the current
27 Web Editions at no cost. The library must still sign a license
agreement. There is no charge at this time to gain access to the
current 27 Web Editions as a participant of TexShare. Please take
note, that there may be a charge in the future, when and if new
ACS journals are published as Web Editions. Should this happen,
libraries that have been getting fee-free access will have the option
to opt out of the program.
Can a library take an electronic-only subscription?
Yes, a library can take an electronic-only subscription. In
this situation, the librarian is encouraged to contact the ACS Account
Manager, Doug Storm (email:
d_storm@acs.org), to receive the preliminary quote of the costs.
This options cost will be considered on a case-by-case basis
until an official policy is designed to meet this growing demand.
Can a library cancel its print subscription renewals next year
and still participate in the TexShare agreement?
The library can not cancel its print subscription renewals
unless the library goes to all electronic subscriptions. Each librarys
situation will be considered on a case-by-case basis if there are
changes to the current subscriptions. Please contact the ACS Account
Manager, Doug Storm (email: d_storm@acs.org),
for details.
If a library has duplicate print subscriptions to an ACS journal,
is the library required to pay an additional 15% for each subscription
(both)?
Yes, under the current Option B plan, the library must pay
15% for all ACS print subscriptions (which offer Web Editions) -
that includes duplicate or multiple institutional copies subscribed
to by the library or institutional departments to benefit fully
in the ACS-TexShare consortial arrangement. Individual subscriptions
held by professors, instructors or individuals are not charged this
additional 15% Option B cost, only institutional subscriptions subscribed
to by the library and/or institution.
How will new ACS Web Edition titles that begin publication
in 2001 be included in the TexShare consortial agreement? What will
be the cost to my library?
The cost to libraries for any new publications published by the
ACS in 2001 and beyond will be determined on a case-by-case basis
for any library that does not have a print subscription to the new
publication(s). This policy does not pertain to the current access
to the 27 ACS Web Editions included in the initial TexShare consortial
offer, which is made available regardless of the number of ACS print
subscriptions.
Does the library need an ID/Password?
No, access is via IP authentication. The library will need to supply
its specific IP Address.
How do I determine what my librarys IP address is?
If you are not aware of what the librarys IP address is,
you can check for IPs by going to the ACS Technical Support
URL. At that site, you simply click on appropriate button, and the
ACS will determine for you what your specific IP address is. Go
to URL:
http://pubs.acs.org:9000
Does the ACS provide Usage Statistics?
The ACS provides one of the most comprehensive reports of any
online publisher that allows a librarian to track online usage
by journal, per format (HTML and PDF), searches, and downloads
per IP Address. This is sent via email to the license administrator/contact
person at each participating library.
Is a signed license agreement required?
Yes, each individual library that participates must sign an agreement
that is specific to their institution.
Can Walk-in patrons access Web Editions?
Yes, per the license agreement, walk-in patrons can
access the ACS Web Editions on site at the library.
Is remote access allowed?
Yes, authenticated users can access the ACS Web Editions through
the librarys proxy server, if the librarys server has
this dial-in capability.
Is simultaneous usage allowed?
Yes, there is unlimited simultaneous usage 24/7/365.
