Beverley Shirley
Introductions: Introduction of working group members. Several
new members have been added to the working group: Joan Alcott,
Clara Fowler, Laura Heinz, Ping Liu, Beth Marsh, Farzaneh
Razzaghi, Pam Spooner, and Teri Stover
Election of Chair: Lisa Loranc was elected as chair.
TexShare Budget - Beverley Shirley:
FY 03 cuts for TexShare fairly invisible. The funds for
the databases during FY02 were spent conservatively. Funds
are limited as renewals for July 1 unless TIF money is unfrozen.
TSLAC is requesting grant for FY03 be a 2 year grant.
Electronic Information working group is conducting a survey
for the databases allowing one response per library. Legislative
Board has told TSLAC to look into rate how important the
databases are to you. Fees for the databases will be reinstated
next fiscal year. TExpress subsidies will also be cut in
half.
Role of Working Group - Dawn Vogler:
Suggested that the Education Working Group meet with TSLAC
and Systems continuing education group at their yearly meeting.
The working group will get a better idea of other training
needs are needed within libraries as well as making the
working group TexShare training needs known to the Systems
and TSLAC. Results of the survey can be brought to the meeting.
The group unanimously decided to meet with the Systems
Continuing Education group yearly. The suggestion will be
taken to Systems to see if they are open to the two groups
meeting together.
Training Needs:
Train the Trainer, more advance training by vendor, develop
self paced training modules, what skills do they need, what
kinds of questions are they unable to answer.
Suggested to place training handouts up on the web page
for libraries to use. Links such as to LOEX can also be
put on the TexShare web page for training needs. LOEX provides
general training handouts for various topics. Other links
will also be investigated as possible sites to use for training
needs.
LD Update - Dawn Vogler:
People wanted subject specific training in health and legal
resources.
Provided 20 workshops - 2 in each 10 public library systems.
Ebsco offered basic training but no advanced training.
Ideas for future training - TexShare topics, how to promote
TexShare or legal ramifications. Alternative delivery methods
were mentioned such as video or video conferencing or an
online tutorial.
Survey - Dawn Vogler:
Survey completed in 2000 although effective proved to have
some problems: asked too many questions, not clear who was
to respond, few TexShare issues brought in. Another survey
was done in 2001 to update the earlier survey with fewer
questions. A lot of training has happened in the past year
and would like to get an update. Recommendation from the
working group on what kind of questions to ask.
The group determined another survey was needed on what
libraries needed in the way of training for TexShare. This
should be completed in early may to compile the information
and be able to report at the continuing education systems
meeting in June or July. Clara Fowler and Jerry Hoke will
draft a survey and send to the other members for comment.
The survey will go out to the TexShare members April 1st
to be back May 1st.
